Abstract:
|
Communities of practice offer many benefits to both practitioners and their home institutions. You're participating in one now! However, certain conditions have been identified that limit the effectiveness and lifespan of communities of practice. And we've all felt it: this inexorable return to doing everything faster, sooner, NOW! In today's world, advisors are expected to balance the evident benefits of information technology solutions and accessibility with the human realities of living under pressure. And what do we do when students and institutions just contribute to the speed at which we are expected to work? These conditions not only work against communities of practice, they also largely define academic advising work. Solutions, my friends, can be found in the Slow Movement, which began in response to fast food, but has now expanded into higher education. Join us as we slow down and discuss how to strategically negotiate with these competing forces to find not only balance but also pleasure, collaboration, understanding, collegiality, beauty, rest, and maybe even community. |
