Title: Creating Learning Outcomes for Murky Middle: A Working Session to Facilitate Innovative Advising With This Population
Lead Presenter: Shannon Rios
Date: October 05, 2020    Time: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Room: Preconference Workshop
Abstract: College students' academic success varies greatly. Some students soar to the top, while others tend to coast under the radar. The Murky Middle consists of students drifting along sometimes unnoticed as they are not top tier academics but they are also not in extreme danger of falling on academic probation. The Educational Advisory Board (2014) defined the Murky Middle as "first year students finishing with a GPA between 2.0 and 3.0." Focused academic advising with specific learning outcomes could help guide these students to higher GPAs and higher rates of persistence. Using Tinto's Theory of Institutional Departure as well as Sense of Belonging Theory, academic advisors can tailor advising sessions to fit this unique student population. Through small group work as well as individual assessment, this preconference session will provide attendees a better understanding of the Murky Middle, allow them to brainstorm innovative ways to work with these students, and help them develop learning outcomes for academic advising sessions. Attendees will take away individualized plans including learning outcomes, ideas for triaging this population, plans to ensure student attendance in tailored advising sessions, e-mail outreach templates, and advising session scripts.
