Title: The Role of Academic Advisors' in Cultivating Students' Sense of Belonging
Lead Presenter: Traci Cummings-McGreal
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: Academic advising is an important intervention in a student's journey to discover their sense of belonging. We know that academic advisors are often a student's only administrative contact at their college or university. Many researchers and theorists have found that belonging plays a foundational role in student motivation, academic and social integration, and student persistence. While institutions try to cultivate these experiences through orientation experiences, campus activities, and first-year seminars, these experiences can be short-lived. As advisors, our connections with students often span their entire college career. This session will discuss the literature on belonging/mattering, facilitate brainstorming and discussion on strategies to foster students' sense of belonging, and conclude with putting knowledge into practice.
