From Obstacles to Opportunities: Promoting Holistic Student Support in Community Colleges
According to many higher education leaders and experts, holistic advising is a critical ingredient for promoting equity and student success in higher education. Unfortunately, few institutions succeed in providing this type of targeted, proactive, sustained advising support. From resource constraints to lack of value for advising among leadership, the barriers to holistic advising are many-particularly for community colleges. In this session, the presenters will share tips and strategies from their work at institutions across the country (including a large community college in Texas) to promote holistic advising practices in the face of significant obstacles and resistance. Participants will have an opportunity to reflect on steps they can take in their role to promote a more holistic approach to advising. |
