Title: Building a Peer-Driven Community of Practice (CoP) in Academic Advising: A Practitioner's Journey
Lead Presenter: Bradford Beck
Date: October 29, 2025    Time: 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Room: Pompeian Ballroom II, Promenade Level
Abstract: How can academic advisors enhance how they collaborate, share knowledge, and support each other in a dynamic profession? A Community of Practice (CoP) provides a structured, peer-driven approach to professional learning. This session explores the practitioner's journey in forming a CoP, establishing a clear domain, and fostering an advisor-led space for mentorship, research, and collaboration.

Attendees will engage in interactive discussions, collaborative exercises, and strategy-building to develop a CoP framework adaptable to their institutions. The session highlights best practices for sustaining a CoP, strategies for expanding beyond a single institution, and opportunities for ongoing engagement. Participants will leave with actionable steps to establish or enhance a CoP and contribute to a broader advising network. This session provides a pathway for advisors to shape a sustainable, peer-led professional community that advances the field of academic advising.
