Conference Year: 2025
Session #: P07(PRE-2)
Title: What Does it Mean to be a Woman in Advising?
Lead Presenter: Kacey Gregerson
Date: October 26, 2025    Time: 9:00 am - 11:00 am
Room: Salerno, Promenade Level
Abstract: In this session, we will tackle some of the obstacles womxn may experience in the field of advising by pulling from resources including Work Won't Love You Back by Sarah Jaffe; Better, Faster, Farther by Maggie Mertens; Creating Sustainable Careers in Student Affairs by Margaret W. Sallee; and Burnout by Nagoski and Nagoski. These texts will serve as the foundation for the workshop - focusing on workplace values, including the historical gendered roles of certain industries, ideal worker norms and socialization, as well as addressing and combating emotional exhaustion.

Attendees can expect the following through group discussion and reflection:
-To provide context for why the advising profession can invoke a feminist lens
-To validate the experiences womxn advisors have felt in the profession
-To encourage participants to consider the role of caring in their work
-To empower participants, especially womxn advisors, to advocate for themselves and their colleagues

The presenters acknowledge their privileged identities as white, cis-gendered women, and welcome anyone interested in this topic to join us (men, women, trans, and non-binary). This highly interactive session aims to give participants validation in their own advising practice. We hope they leave the session empowered to talk with others and encouraged to continue the conversation at their own institutions using the workbook from the session as a guide.
