Title: Mental Health on the Front Lines: Navigating Advising Relationships as Non-Clinicians
Lead Presenter: Kevin Valliere
Date: On-Demand
Room: On Demand
Abstract: With mental health issues on the rise in higher education, advisors are often at the front lines of care for students with complex needs. Despite not being licensed clinicians, advisors are still frequently faced with the prospect of a student revealing sensitive information or patterns of behavior that sound like depression, anxiety, and more. But what level of care is professionally appropriate within the advising setting?

In this session, advisors will learn about current trends in mental health and try out practical strategies that can help to establish healthy boundaries between advising and counseling. We will blend theory, role play and Q&A to equip participants to feel more confident in dealing with these sensitive situations.
