Title: Strategies for Encouraging Peer Advisor Advocacy and Civic Engagement
Lead Presenter: Eve Millett
Date: October 08, 2020    Time: 1:10 pm - 1:55 pm
Room: Live
Abstract: Peer advisors play a unique role in higher education. As students they want to participate in campus culture, which may include advocacy work. However, peer advisors are paraprofessionals for the university and have an obligation to uphold university policies and procedures. In this session, a supervisor of student peer advisors and one peer advisor will share how their peer advisor program works to support student advocacy and civic engagement within their program. Participants will learn about identity theories, learn how to apply theory to their work with peer advisors, learn a model they can utilize to create a student advocacy/ civically minded peer advisor program, engage in discussions of case studies regarding implementation of such a program, and hear from a current student in the program.
