Title: No Islands in Advising! A Curriculum Connects Theory to Practice
Lead Presenter: Ruth Bingham
Date: On-Demand
Room: On Demand
Abstract: Advising theories are well and good, but how do they shape what happens in everyday advising? In appointments, what should be consistent and what unique to the advisor? Advising is teaching, but are we all teaching different things? For advising to be effective and assessable, advisors need to know what they are teaching, understand the goals and learning outcomes of appointments, and be reasonably confident that their fellow advisors are teaching the same curriculum. This session demonstrates how to create an advising curriculum shaped by theory and how to create a curriculum map to cover students' academic journeys. Participants will draft a curriculum for one type of appointment and a curriculum map to use as templates for a comprehensive advising curriculum for their own institutions.
