Abstract:
|
African Americans remain underrepresented in career fields requiring a graduate education. Romsa and colleagues are generating a mixed methods study to build a stronger body of knowledge about initiatives for reducing inequality in graduate education for African American student-athletes so that faculty, academic advising professionals, and athletic departments can more effectively respond to their needs. Participants of their study will include African American student-athletes chosen through purposive sampling who will participate in a workshop to (a) learn about careers requiring graduate degrees and to (b) develop an Individual Development Plan (IDP), a personalized road map that outlines a person's career goals and skills. Using Planned Happenstance Theory as a conceptual framework, this study will provide recommendations for professionals to assist African Americans in optimizing their graduate career development. |
