Title: Exploring Advising Praxis - From Theory to Practice
Lead Presenter: Oscar van den Wijngaard
Date: October 05, 2020    Time: 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Room: Preconference Workshop
Abstract: NACADA actively promotes a 'scholarly approach' to academic advising, by encouraging and facilitating advisors to engage in research and publish about it. Critical exercises like the design and assessment of advising programs are increasingly based on data and quantitative and qualitative analysis. What it means to be 'scholarly' in the context of day-to-day advising practice, however, may still remain somewhat elusive for many practitioners. What does it mean to connect theory to practice? Do we analyze and understand our own practice enough to see which theory or theories may apply, and how? The new peer-reviewed online journal The NACADA Review introduced the concept of 'praxis': the intentional and systematic application of theory to practice. Using templates and visuals developed by this online journal, participants will map and analyze their own practice and identify connections with theory. A systematic comparison between theory and practice will make it possible to progress from isolated, anecdotal applications of theories and models to a coherent, intentional approach in shaping the advising practice. In this workshop, advisors will work in small teams following a systematic approach, discussing and dissecting practice and linking it to theories new and familiar. The outcome of this workshop will be that advisors have explored new ways to connect theory and practice and thus further develop a scholarly attitude to their daily advising practice.
