Title: Planting the SEED for Advisor Cultural Competence
Lead Presenter: Cecilia Lucero
Date: October 05, 2020    Time: 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Room: Preconference Workshop
Abstract: Equity and diversity are critically important in higher education institutions, and academic advisors are increasingly at the forefront of conversations about them. While many campuses have put forth diversity and inclusion initiatives, the most effective approaches to keep these movements alive and well are still being discovered. With regard to advising, the need for cultivating cultural competence through professional development - key to achieving equity and inclusion, which are part of the relational component of NACADA's core competencies - is ever more important. The National SEED Project (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) is one such example of a program for professional development. SEED trains educators who facilitate a seminar series on their own campuses designed to create authentic, non-judgmental entry points for conversations around systems of power, oppression, and privilege. In this pre-conference workshop, presenters will describe the SEED's benefits, particularly for cultural competence, and how it strengthens advising practice. Presenters will facilitate engaging and thought-provoking exercises that foster "aha" moments and allow for personal reflections and group discussions about race, class, gender and other social issues. Presenters will also offer their perspectives on how SEED develops their own cultural competence and enhances their relationships with students and colleagues. Finally, presenters will discuss the ways SEED might be adapted to particular institutions. (Presenters will address, for example, time commitment, format, and cost.) Presenters will also provide participants with a resource guide for readings, videos, and exercises they might use to design their own SEED seminars.
