Title: Connecting Students From Afar: Using Technology to Cultivate a Sense of Belonging
Lead Presenter: Jackie Duerr
Date: On-Demand
Room: On Demand
Abstract: As institutions pivot to online courses and engagement opportunities, how are we ensuring students are receiving access to the same opportunities to engage in our programs and services if they are unable to be physically present? Sometimes the only space available for advisors and student affairs professionals to meet with students and build community is cyberspace. This session will share qualitative research findings on how commuter students from Hispanic Serving Institutions build their sense of belonging through technology. By understanding the experiences of commuter students, attendees will learn key themes associated with successful technology integration and community building, and dialogue about the technology we use to share information and build relationships. Together, we will explore the vast possibilities for student services and advising to exist outside of brick-and-mortar buildings.
