Title: How Do We Know Advising Is Done Well? Using NACADA Core Competencies to Assess Advising
Lead Presenter: James Cole
Date: On-Demand
Room: On Demand
Abstract: Advising is done well when students are provided with the timely accurate information and resources, when advisors actively listen to their concerns, when students feel respected, and when it contributes to improved persistence and graduation rates. Recognizing the need for actionable data, the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) created an academic advising module that can be appended to the NSSE core survey. In addition, Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE), provides data regarding entering student characteristics that allows for effective personalized advising. This presentation will focus on research results using data from NSSE 2019 and BCSSE 2018. Presenters will then detail how institutions can map NSSE data to the NACADA core competencies. The presenters will facilitate discussions about how mapping the data to the NACADA competencies can facilitate improvements on their campus.
