Title: Ethical Principles and Big Data in Student Success
Lead Presenter: Adrienne Sewell
Date: On-Demand
Room: On Demand
Abstract: Higher education increasingly relies on big data as a tool for retention, and academic advising sits at the center of this trend. Using predictive analytics, data filtering, and risk assessments we try to reach the highest priority students at the most effective moment in their education. Big data is exciting and potentially transformative, but we cannot ignore ethical issues in how we utilize it.

This session discusses two main ethical principles of importance in big data: transparency and bias. How legible is the algorithm that feeds risk assessment? How do we keep from unintentionally perpetuating cycles of systemic discrimination? Attendees will leave this session with a framework to apply to their campus context, as well as strategies for utilizing big data ethically
