Abstract:
|
The support needs of graduate and professional students differ from undergraduates. The roles and functions of professionals who advise and support graduate and professional students vary in complexity in title and function. This presentation will share the findings of a study conducted to identify the roles and functions of nonfaculty advisors of graduate and professional students (n = 283), how those roles differed across institutional type and caseload, magnify challenges encountered in the work, and determine to what extent participants were satisfied and felt valued. Participants will engage in an interactive discussion of the challenges encountered and retention strategies for this student population. The knowledge gathered from this presentation will help to best align the roles and responsibilities of graduate and primary role advisor positions with the appropriate support needed by graduate and professional learners. |
