Abstract:
|
Recently, our Board of Regents restricted the usage of descriptor words for many student populations that make up the largest percentage of our student populations, so we wonder: how do the underrepresented populations find a story about their academic selves, when they are written out of the 'approved' language of the university?
Our first-year academic advising team employs techniques borrowed from narrative therapy traditions, a constructionist theory based model, in unpacking the kinds of internalized narratives students often bring with them into the university. We will also look at how these narratives match with, and diverge from, those that the university tells about first-year students through data. Advisors are often in the mix of these stories, and thus we have a powerful position in the synthesis f these narratives to promote student growth. |
