Title: Stay Afloat With Group Advising: Rethinking the Advising Experience of First-Year STEM Students

Abstract: For advisors who work with large caseloads, group advising is an efficient approach to relay pertinent information and influence student identity development and persistence. In this presentation, academic advisors from our institution will discuss their experiences implementing group advising for first-year engineering students. Using Chickering and Reisser's (1993) theory of student development as a framework, the presenters will: (1) Describe the advantages and challenges associated with group advising for students and advisors; (2) Introduce our model for advising engineering students in a group setting, including best practices and areas for growth; and (3) Offer ways in which group advising can be implemented for students at advisors' home institutions.
