Abstract: American college faculty, advisors and administrators do not see themselves as perpetuating colonialism. While many administrators recognize intellectual colonialism within developing nations globally, most ignore our own colonial roots that are ever present in today's American colleges and universities. The purpose of this presentation is to highlight America's contemporary higher education colonial roots as seen, witnessed, and practiced within academic advising on most college campuses. A vital outcome of this presentation is helping academic advisors and administrators take ownership of these colonial learning structures and replace them with strategies that de/colonize our college campuses and create advising practices that encourage Indigenous and underrepresented students onto our campuses and into our advising offices. This program offers positive, affirming advising strategies that support the NACADA core values.
