Abstract:
|
Assessment is often focused on accountability and compliance rather than continuous improvement. However, simply collecting data is not enough-institutions need a structured approach to enacting meaningful change based on assessment results. Even when improvement is the goal, practitioners are still uncertain if the intervention, approach and/or programming change will actually lead to improved outcomes. Improvement science provides a research-based methodology that emphasizes small, measurable tests of change to refine advising practices over time.
This interactive session will introduce participants to improvement science principles and their alignment with NACADA's advising assessment models. Participants will explore how Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles can be used to test interventions on a small scale before full implementation, ensuring evidence-based decision-making and sustainable improvements.
Through a combination of theoretical foundations, case studies, and hands-on application, attendees will:
- Identify advising-related challenges that could benefit from improvement science methodologies.
- Apply the PDSA cycle to develop a structured plan for testing changes.
- Engage in peer collaboration to refine their ideas and anticipate implementation barriers.
- Develop a personalized action plan to integrate continuous improvement cycles within their institution's advising framework.
By the end of the session, participants will leave with practical strategies and tools for moving from assessment to action, ensuring that advising initiatives are not only evaluated but enhanced through iterative, data-informed processes. Whether new to assessment or looking to refine existing practices, this session will provide an innovative and sustainable approach to advising improvement. |
