Abstract: Do you occasionally crush a student's dream? Delivering bad news successfully is a skill that can be developed, increasing the academic advisor's effectiveness. At times we discuss academic standing with a student who is dismissed, or who is not admitted into a competitive major. As a result, academic advisors may serve as the outlet for students' disappointment, frustration, and fear: emotions that can mirror the experience of grief. This presentation reviews Kübler-Ross's five stages of grief, commonalities between grief and academic "bad news," and student interaction tips. Scenarios illustrate the use of counseling related techniques, without serving the role of a counselor. We will offer suggestions on how to have these conversations while fostering a solution-focused and optimistic mindset.
