Abstract:
|
Oftentimes students need to learn how to believe in themselves and their capabilities. This is especially true for students with autism who are vulnerable to experiences that will affect how they view themselves, as well as what they believe they can achieve in life. As advisors, we have the ability to support these specific struggles in significant ways. We can learn basic terminology relating to autism and neurodiversity, create more accommodating environments in our offices, become aware of common symptoms and co-occurring conditions, and connect ourselves to institutional resources that can be beneficial for students with autism. By developing understanding, gaining self-awareness, breaking down internalized stereotypes, and practicing an intentional belief in our autistic students, we can help them become more confident and resilient as they progress forward in their lives. |
