Title: Fixed? Time to Break It! Advising Toward a Growth Mindset to Increase Student Success
Lead Presenter: Bobby Brown
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Room: 263, DECC
Abstract: External funding pressures have prompted higher education institutions to increase focus on student retention, persistence, and degree completion across the broad student population. Research by Carol Dweck, Ph.D., has shown that an individual's mindset is directly related to his/her ability to achieve his/her goals. Encouraging a growth mindset in students empowers them to challenge themselves and trust their ability to succeed. This presentation will introduce the concept of growth mindset and how to effectively apply strategies promoting it within the academic advising context. Participants will:
1) Understand the concept of fixed and growth mindsets.
2) Evaluate their own mindsets.
3) Learn how to apply mindset concepts in their advising practice.
4) Use case studies to apply concepts learned to practical situations.
