Title: It Takes a Village: Building Community as a Retention Strategy

Abstract: Fostering a sense of belonging is a key component of student retention; creating community and building relationships with faculty, staff, and peers is critical to persistence. Therefore, the presenters focus on establishing early connections through proactive advising, programming, and academic opportunities. Using a three-pronged approach, the staff intentionally facilitates a variety of opportunities for students to connect. This session focuses on the significant link between retention and belongingness, and will present strategies to build strong communities. Participants will brainstorm ways to build community on their own campuses in an effort to improve retention.
