Title: Stealth Advising: How Advisors Introduce Academic Substance Into Routine Conversations

Abstract: How do academic advisors encourage students to consider the meaning, value, and logic of their educational journeys during advising appointments, despite pressures from students and others to focus on discussing rote information, such as curricular rules and requirements? I introduce the concept of stealth advising to describe the practical strategies advisors use to weave novel content into rote conversations with students in ways that do not disrupt conversational flow or sacrifice good rapport. Drawing on observations of advising appointments and interviews with students and their advisors, I describe three such strategies: checking in on students' progress and experiences, supplementing rote information with related content, and challenging or questioning students' decisions. I discuss the challenges and limitations of stealth advising as a means to achieve quality advising.
