Title: Building Bridges: Community College STEM Transfer Student Experiences
Lead Presenter: Beth Markowitz
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Room: Exhibit Hall A
Abstract: Partnerships between universities and community colleges provide support systems that help transfer students integrate into and succeed at the four-year institution. They can also create curricular alignment, which is particularly helpful to STEM majors who require a sequential program of study. To understand the impact of such a collaboration I will review the results of an interpretive cross-case study at one private, four-year research university that compared the experiences of six students who participated in a partnership support program to five who did not. Five themes emerged: Pipeline Program Creates Unique Environment, Integration and Adjustment Struggles, STEM Cultural Challenges, Support Essential for Survival, and Student Initiative. In a competitive, new environment, students in the partnership support program benefitted from consistent academic and social supports.
