Title: Are They as Engaged as They Say? Utilizing an Early-Enrollment Tool to Anticipate Student Engagement
Lead Presenter: Brian Gorman
Date: October 09, 2021    Time: 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Room: 201/202, DECC
Abstract: Because attrition rates are highest during students' first year of college, it is important for institutions to find ways of engaging freshmen early in their college career to aid in retention. Early-enrollment instruments and the use of data analytics can be useful in identifying student risk factors that may lead to their not returning to college for their second year. Presenters will discuss a 2020 study that investigated the influence of background characteristics on student anticipated engagement, and student actual engagement during their first semester, and how background characteristics, anticipated engagement, and actual advising and Student Life engagement predicted first-term GPA and credits earned. Findings indicate significant differences in anticipated and actual engagement by background characteristics, and that background characteristics, and anticipated and actual engagement can predict first-term GPA and credits earned.
