Title: We're All In This Together: The Power of Affinity Groups and Benefits for Students With Disabilities
Lead Presenter: Miriam Smith
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Room: Zoom Room 2
Abstract: Despite increased support programs, changes in federal legislation, an increased awareness of disability law and inclusion in higher education, students with disabilities still face many challenges that can adversely impact both their academic success and social integration on campus (Yssel, Pak, & Beilke, 2016).
Affinity groups can help students with disabilities successfully negotiate these population-specific challenges by creating a sense of belonging. Research has shown that a sense of belonging leads to greater academic success and persistence (Vaccaro, Daly-Cano & Newman, 2015). How can we create a sense of belonging for this student population? One answer, a peer mentorship program. Participants will learn how to develop a mentorship program for students with disabilities.
