Title: Sinking Into Grief: Issues of Bereavement and Loss in the Advising Relationship
Lead Presenter: Emile Boutin
Date: October 09, 2021    Time: 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Room: 211, DECC
Abstract: The Covid pandemic has created a crisis of grief and loss across our campuses: deaths of family and friends without rituals of grief, loss of socialization, remote learning, delayed graduations, food insecurity, and employment and financial losses. What is an academic advisor to do? This interactive workshop will first present contemporary approaches to loss and grief. Then, in light of relational advising core competencies that challenge us to facilitate meaning making with our students, we will explore communication and interpersonal skills through a case study model to refine our advising practice. Attention will be given to developing open ended questions, body language, physical space and Zoom, how to deal with tears, managing silence, and meaning making exercises and rituals.
