Title: Creating a Questioning Culture in Advising
Lead Presenter: Sara Jones
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 2:15 pm - 3:15 pm
Room: Zoom Room 2
Abstract: Academic advisors commonly act as a coach, a facilitator, and a resource beyond simple questions such as 'Which math class do I need to take?' While many advisors are not professional counselors, they are often the first person to which students will come when facing a life crisis, a significant change, or a difficult decision. One important skill that advisors can develop is that of asking effective questions to empower students. By adopting a posture of a facilitator and relying on questions to help students find the solutions to their problems, advisors can have the greatest possible impact as mentors. In this session, advisors will learn how to use open-ended questioning to unlock their students' potential and establish respectful and effective advising relationships.
