Title: Native Stories: Academic Advising Lessons From Native American Students
Lead Presenter: Brian Peters
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 3:15 pm - 4:15 pm
Room: 252, DECC
Abstract: Native American students have been part of U.S. higher education since the colonial period, but are the least likely to attend higher education after a history of discrimination, removal, and assimilation. Academic advisors could serve Native students better if they knew the perspectives, cultures, and history of their local tribal communities. In this narrative study, the stories of nine Native American students in North Carolina discussed their college choice and experiences in higher education. Academic advising experiences were discussed by four participants. In this paper, lessons on academic advising Native American students and implications for the field of advising will be discussed.
