Abstract:
|
Nobody likes to have difficult conversations with students. Whether you must talk about academic probation, GPA issues, or class withdrawals, it is never easy. Avoiding these conversations or offering partial information only leads to more confusion. Though building strong relationships with students and maintaining a positive outlook is important, advisors must also hold professional boundaries to provide clear guidance and support. In this session, we'll explore advising approaches that encourage students to take responsibility for their academic choices while providing the necessary support to help them succeed. We'll explore two tools: an advising syllabus, which establishes clear expectations from the outset, and parallel planning, which fosters student accountability and provides a proactive approach to identifying and addressing potential challenges. Participants will leave with strategies to navigate these tricky scenarios confidently. |
