Title: Librarian Advisors for Undeclared Students: Understanding the Advisee Experience
Lead Presenter: Claire Wiley
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Room: Zoom Room 1
Abstract: This presentation will share the results of a NACADA Research Grant-funded study exploring librarians as advisors to undeclared students. Formerly undeclared students were invited to participate in interviews about their experience. Transcript analysis uncovers interesting themes related to advisee expectations, librarian knowledge, and personal connection between advisor and advisee. This study reveals a need for improved advisee/advisor communication, collaboration between student support offices and advisors, and efforts to support this group's social development on campus. Presenters will provide background on the librarian-as advisor model, share next steps identified for our program, including implications for librarian-advisor training and new efforts to support undeclared students, as well as broad applications for other, non-librarian advisors who serve undeclared students.
