Title: Fostering Intercultural Collaboration: Using Scaffolding to Improve International Student Advising
Lead Presenter: William Longbottom
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 11:15 am - 12:15 pm
Room: 212, DECC
Abstract: Academic advisors are among the first 'representatives' of an institution with whom international students interact regarding program requirements, campus resources, and long-term academic goals. Successful advising of international students requires effective intercultural communication skills to navigate through contrasting perceptions of academic advising and cultural differences. This interactive session discusses scaffolding, the collaborative dialogue in which an advisor helps a student understand a new concept that he or she would otherwise not have been able to learn independently, as an effective skill to help foster international student growth. Through guided advising-based examples of scaffolding, participants in this session will assess their own intercultural communication skills and identify specific advising topics in which scaffolding could improve their intercultural communication with their international students.
