Title: "Pre-Meds are a Lot": Supporting Newcomers to Medicine Who Avoid Pre-Med Circles
Lead Presenter: Lillian Sims
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Room: 252, DECC
Abstract: Students aspiring to medical school must navigate an intense multi-year preparation process, during which they develop their career interest; build relevant experiences such as shadowing, volunteering, or working in medical contexts; and of course, typically complete a college degree. 'Newcomers' without early social exposure to the field in particular can benefit tremendously from forming social connections in the field at this time, including with mentors and peers; however, these students, especially those from underrepresented-in-medicine (URM) backgrounds, may hesitate to engage with pre-med circles. This mixed methods study explores the perspectives of 261 medical students as they reflect on their pre-medical experiences, addressing 1) why some students avoid pre-med circles despite their potential benefits, and 2) how stakeholders can best support students who are socially disconnected from pre-med social circles.
