Lead Presenter: Xiao Yuan

Room: 252, DECC
Abstract: Students' sense of belonging contributes to their college experience and academic success. International students' sense of belonging is often overlooked by academia, though research on this population agreed that they face cultural adaptation challenges and have a low sense of belonging to institutions. This study examined the impacts of academic advisors' cross-cultural empathy and students' advising satisfaction on international students' sense of belonging to institutions in the United States higher education. The findings revealed that advisors' cross-cultural empathy and students' advising satisfaction predicted international students' sense of belonging. Advisors' cross-cultural empathy partially mediated the effect of advising satisfaction on the sense of belonging. This research provided institutions and advisors valuable information on professional training and special population advising.
