Lead Presenter: Melissa Lantta
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 9:15 am - 10:15 am
Room: 201/202, DECC
Abstract: 'Shame derives its power from being unspeakable...If we cultivate enough awareness about shame, to name it and speak to it, we've basically cut it off at the knees.' (Brene Brown, Daring Greatly, p. 67). Shame. Feeling like an imposter. These are things that students carry with them into our institutions and our advising conversations. How can we, as advisors, help students call-out shame and develop resilience? This session will provide participants with research and theory around identity formation, imposter phenomenon and shame. They will leave armed with some tools to strengthen their advising practices and help students confront shame head-on.
