Title: Inclusion Versus Isolation: Applying the UDL Framework to Academic Advising
Lead Presenter: Elizabeth Smith
Date: October 09, 2021    Time: 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Room: Jr. Ballroom D, DECC
Abstract: Inclusion is a topic of concern on today's campuses. Everyone wants to be included in 'the BIG conversation' but for academic advisors, ensuring students are supported and connected is especially important. Amid the pandemic, students are increasingly reporting feelings of isolation and loneliness. As academic advisors, what can we do to ensure students feel connected? Enter Universal Design for Learning (UDL). This educational framework tackles barriers students encounter in educational environments. The presentation will share tenets of UDL and demonstrate how academic advisors can design inclusive advising practices which empower students to increase engagement. Current UDL resources and best practices will be provided, and attendees will participate in engaging activities as they develop UDL advising strategies to use on their own campuses.
