Abstract:
|
Eco-anxiety is a response to the ecological catastrophe that our planet is suffering, which can manifest as any combination of fear, guilt, grief, anger, and despair. This session will familiarize academic advisors with the causes and manifestations of eco-anxiety and help them explore approaches for supporting students who are distressed by the growing magnitude of Earth's ecological crisis. We will also touch on the related concept of pandemic distress (also called coronavirus anxiety). Drawing on scholarly literature, we will explore various strategies to help us (academic advisors and students alike) to cope with cope with eco-anxiety in positive ways including strengthening our connectedness with the natural world; mindfulness practices; social-emotional learning; finding and focusing on sources of hope; humor; and engaging in constructive forms of activism balanced with self-care. |
