Title: Advising Assessment and Backward Design

Abstract: Advising is teaching, and the goal of teaching is for students to learn. Assessment is necessary to determine what students learn. Adapting best practices in teaching can improve student learning. Backward design (Wiggins & McTighe 2005) is an educational practice that focuses first on creating learning objectives and student learning outcomes (SLOs) and then on designing curricular delivery. It places learning before teaching. Our advising center team adapted a backward design approach to revise our post-advising meeting assessment. We share our assessment revision process, including selection of SLOs from our advising syllabus that are in alignment with our institution's strategic plan, development of an assessment survey in partnership with our institutional research office, and review of our results with an eye toward improving student learning outcomes.
