Title: Climb to New Heights With an Advising Career Ladder
Lead Presenter: Jessica Simmons
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Room: Zoom Room 4
Abstract: In a 2008 survey, administrators agreed (75%) that career ladders would be an important aspect of professional development for academic advisors. However, only 12% reported using a formal career ladder, and only 10% of advisors reported the existence of a career ladder at their institution. There is no doubt that an advising career ladder has many benefits. It can help enhance the visibility and professionalism of advising; improve the understanding of the role of advisors; address salary deficiencies and inequities; and align job titles, descriptions, and functions. This presentation will showcase how one large, public university implemented an overhaul of advisor job classifications to include an extensive career ladder including 7 levels of promotion for academic advisors, coaches, and student resource specialists and defined benchmarks for promotion based on NACADA Core Competencies.
