Abstract: The Architects of Their Own Education: A Course Framework for Developing Autonomy in Peer Advising

Since 2022, there has been consistent growth in aspiring peer advisors enrolling in our credited course, A Practical Introduction to Peer Advising. Peer Advising Leaders, in partnership with academic deans, teach classes to model best practices in inclusive advising pedagogy while demystifying the hidden curriculum. Presenters will contextualize the open curriculum with data about our student-directed model and share a framework to translate these concepts from theory to practice in developing course curriculum for, and buy-in from, our students. As a result, presenters will engage participants with practical ways to employ an inclusive recruitment model and apply strategies for relationship-building between student leaders and administrators at their unique institutions.
