Abstract:

Anomalies and Misnomers in the Academic Advising Vocabulary
Words matter! The objectives of this program are to raise the consciousness and begin conversations about the potential for the multiple meanings within the language we hear, read, and/or use regularly. Academic advisors and administrators are often parts of teams, committees, research projects, or other collaborative programs that use the specific terms to be addressed in this program.
The controversial terms include: student success, enrollment management, retention, first-year, holistic advising, and first-generation. These terms have, for the most part, maintained rather standard meanings, but alternative meanings also exist. This program will provide contrasting alternatives and rationales for these terms. Participants will have opportunities to respond, question, challenge, or affirm their own perspectives on our academic advising vocabulary. |
