Title: Applying Asset-Framed and Social Belonging Research and Practices to Advising

Abstract: COVID-19 exposed systemic inequities within our educational systems. First generation, low income, historically underrepresented students, and students concerned about social belonging experience barriers differently than their peers. They may be stereotyped as less academically capable than others which causes them to experience social identity threat. To combat these barriers and stereotypes, this session will introduce research-based, interventions around assest-framed advising. We will practice using psychologically attuned techniques to reduce social identity threat. Advisors will leave the session with tangible strategies for implementing interventions to support students and increase their sense of belonging in college.

We have adapted material from the Student Experience Project (SEP) and the College Transition Collaborative (CTC) to help advisors understand how students experience moments of transition or difficulty and how the psychologically attuned approach conveys to all students that they are valued, respected, and can excel.
