Abstract: What Advisors Need to Know About Disabilities

What do you know about disabilities? More importantly, what do you know about students with disabilities? As higher education and advising are shifting towards strength-based lenses, we need to take a fresh look at what we think we know about working with students with disabilities. In this session, we will go over various disability models and how they relate to the students we advise. These models will serve as a guide to help understand the accessibility needs of students. We will then spend time discussing development theories about students with disabilities. Finally, we have a discussion about the importance of allowing students with disabilities to define what being a student with a disability means to them.
