Title: "Don't Just Do Something; Stand There:" Systems Thinking for Advisor Training and Development
Lead Presenter: Amanda Ritter
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 9:15 am - 10:15 am
Room: Jr. Ballroom D, DECC
Abstract: This presentation introduces systems thinking as a foundational framework for more effective, more robust, and more dynamic advisor training. Professional academic advisors often feel a pressure to act quickly when addressing deceptively complex problems. Quick fix advising solutions may appear sound at first glance but often create unforeseen problems in unconsidered systems down the line. 'Don't just do something, stand there' instead of the more common approach "don't just stand there, do something" is a systems thinking perspective that will empower advisors to provide better service to the whole student. After our session, attendees will have a basic understanding of how to 'systems think" and have a new tool for applying this framework to their own training and development initiatives.
