Title: Impacting Student Academic Recovery in COVID-19: Identifying and Recruiting Students at High Risk
Lead Presenter: Amanda Donahue
Date: October 09, 2021    Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Room: 201/202, DECC
Abstract: SpringForward, a three-step program focused on academic recovery and persistence at The Ohio State University, assists undergraduate students who experience academic difficulty during their first year. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted how we identify, recruit, and assist the students who needed the most help. Standard measures of academic difficulty, such as autumn semester GPA, were not as useful due to emergency grading schemes and grade inflation. Our students also experienced unforeseen issues both in and out of the classroom that impacted their success. These challenges forced us to reconsider our approach. In this presentation, we will share our lessons learned as we identified, recruited, engaged, and supported struggling students from Spring 2020 to present. We will highlight specific strategies as well as success metrics. We will also directly discuss scalability and adaptation for other institutions.
