Title: Examining the Potential for Academic Advising as an Academic Discipline
Lead Presenter: Craig McGill
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 2:15 pm - 3:15 pm
Room: 252, DECC
Abstract: Since Plato's Academy, academic disciplines such as music, logic, and mathematics have been taught, studied, and investigated. The modern arrangement of academic disciplines can be traced to the 19th century when scholars became increasingly specialized. Scholars have grappled with the status of academic advising as a field of research and practice. As the field grows, graduate certificate and degree programs dedicated to the academic study of advising have emerged. This paper is part of a larger study of these programs. In seeking to understand what constitutes the disciplinary knowledge base of academic advising, we are exploring the content of the programs through content analysis of various program requirements and the content of a common foundations course. The continued growth of graduate programs is necessary to accommodate the growing needs of a growing field/profession.
