Abstract:
|
Black women remain significantly underrepresented in STEM fields, facing compounded barriers related to race and gender. This poster session synthesizes key findings from a literature review and real-world case studies of institutions that have successfully implemented advising models to support Black women in STEM. The session will explore evidence-based advising strategies, including targeted mentorship programs, community peer networks, culturally responsive advising, career pathway development, holistic support systems, and high-impact educational practices (HIPs). Attendees will engage with visual data, case studies, and interactive assessment tools, such as self-assessment surveys and real-time polling, to evaluate their current advising approaches. By the end of the session, academic advisors and higher education professionals will gain actionable strategies to create supportive learning environments that foster resilience, engagement, and persistence for Black women in STEM. |
