Title: Professional Socialization in an Emerging Profession: A Collaborative Autoethnography
Lead Presenter: Craig McGill
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Room: 252, DECC
Abstract: One's entry into a profession is a complicated endeavor that usually begins prior to the official beginning and continues until maturation. Like any professional role, these socialization processes are present for academic advisors in higher education. Advisors and leaders of advisors are actively striving to define and improve professional practice. Yet little scholarship has examined professional socialization and the potential consequences socialization processes have for the trajectory of our field. Five years ago, three primary-role advisors began to explore, through systematic reflection, experiences of professional socialization within the emerging profession of advising. For the current paper, we examine the tensions we experienced in our early years of professional practice and how we navigate them through reflection. We hope to generate a larger discussion regarding professional socialization and clearer boundaries of our professional work roles.
