Title: Advising With Social Justice to Maximize Success for Underprivileged Students
Lead Presenter: Kang Li
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Room: Exhibit Hall A
Abstract: Advising with social justice is to build a fair, equal and just relationship with students. It helps students, especially those underprivileged, to achieve success in higher education. Advisers, as part of the system, need to increase their awareness and understanding of their position of power and how that power could be used or misused in advising settings. We will contextualize the concepts of multiple oppression, students' sense-making, social construction of knowledge and change agency, so advisers can apply them to helping students deal with institutional eisms (racism, sexism, etc.). Participants will learn to empower students and equip them with useful tools to develop positive identities, maximize success and avoid victimization when emerged in what is presented to them in the curriculum, pedagogy and social discourse.
