Title: "Roots Advising": Reconnecting With Our Academic Journey to Inspire Students on Theirs
Lead Presenter: Gregoria Zamora
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Room: Exhibit Hall A
Abstract: What skills and language does the advisor who studied Biology, Spanish, or Counseling bring to the student development experience? How do advisors tap into these skills to enhance our practice? This presentation focuses on how advisors bring their passion for higher education, their content area, and their use of home language into advising. We will focus on the sociolinguistics of advising, personal awareness that feeds professional development, and how advisors can use critically conscious practices to build student relationships. Participants will be asked to reflect on their personal and academic roots to explore what drew them to their field of study, to pursue a career in higher education, and how they have made connections between these areas and their individual and cultural identity.
